Thunderstorms Lead to Storm Warnings in Phoenix Area
Before the actual storm happened, the National Weather Service issued storm warnings for Surprise, El Mirage, and Sun City West just before 8.45 p.m. The storm continued longer than it was expected.
The storm warning was initially set to expire at 9.15 p.m. However, authorities wound up extending it until 10 p.m.
According to Weather Service, the storm would bring a strong rush of wind of up to 50 mph.
East Valley was also affected by the storm later in the evening, which brought heavy rains to some areas, including Mesa, after 11 p.m.
Another storm advisory was issued for that region, including the Scottsdale area.
On its Twitter account, the city of Phoenix reported radar detected penny-sized hail near Sun City West at around 9.15 p.m.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory just after 8 p.m. Areas including north Phoenix, such as Phoenix, Laveen, Glendale, Avondale, El Mirage and Sun City should watch out for storms.
The ‘’strong thunderstorms ‘’ were moving southwest at 20 mph with the wind of more than 40 mph.
It’s worth having a look at the numbers.
The area near Lake Pleasant in the northwest valley had 0.75 inches of rain.
New River had 0.12 inches and an area north of Deer Valley had 0.13 inches, said Maricopa County Flood Control District.
Thunderstorms are not uncommon, but this level of storm activity is rare for Phoenix. Make sure you stay safe out there if you have to be outside during the advisory!
