A Phoenix police officer was in critical condition Thursday night after being shot during a traffic stop, officials said.

The suspect got shot too by the officer who returned gunfire, said Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune.

The shooting took place about 8 p.m. at Cave Creek and Cactus roads, according to Fortune.

The police officer has been with the department for about one and a half year. The officer was in a marked police vehicle and was trying to stop a vehicle near the intersection, Fortune said.

Witnesses told the police that the man inside of the stopped vehicle fired shots at the officer, striking him.

The police officer returned the fire and shot the suspect, Fortune added. Both the suspect and the police officer were taken to the hospital in critical condition Thursday night.

It’s not known how many shot the police officer got.

No other suspect was being caught on.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams spoke to reporters about 10.45 p.m. outside Honor John C. Lincoln Medical Center located at Dunlap Avenue and Third Street.

William believes he was ambushed.

The case requires more investigation. She added that representatives of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association with family members were looking forward to updates on the officer’s condition.

Though the officer was in critical condition, he was stable, according to PLEA officials.
